“You’re one of us,” Nelson said. I looked at my friend, equally surprised by the compliment and bewildered by the spin of his words. I had accepted the epithet, “gringa,” long ago; I knew I wasn’t really one of the Afro-descendent or indigenous Chachi people, the two ancestral groups living in that region of the … Continue reading Nelson →

Do you see darkness snuffing out the light? Or do you see bright light shining through the darkness? No doubt, these are difficult times. But I am uplifted seeing all of the people who are actively working not just to save our world, but to build a better one. I feel energized connecting with them. I feel hopeful and strong. The pain of our world is not for one of us to bear alone, nor is the joy for us to create alone. They are ours to share together.
About six months ago, my kids came to me distraught. They’d been watching doomsayers on social media predicting that a world-shattering event would happen on February 22, 2022 – the date of the U.S.’s Pluto return (more on that below). While I have thought my whole life that humanity is heading in a dangerous direction, I have also always believed that it is in our power to transform our reality and to build a better world. I calmed my kids down and reminded them how important it is to care for our world in every single moment as long as we are alive.
“Why do other people have it so easy?” For those of us who struggle with complex trauma, the answer is a bit more complicated than the trite truism, “Don’t believe all the rosy pictures you see on social media; other people have it hard, too.” Complex trauma creates a powerful downward vortex that can take a lifetime of deep inner work and grit to overcome.
Life can be such a struggle sometimes. But there is still beauty and brightness in it all. ✨
From quiet and stillness rise wisdom and strength.
Always be gentle with yourself.🌱
